Students from schools across Darlington are shaping the future of sustainable travel through the Active Travel Ambassadors programme. More than 20 student ambassadors have worked alongside transport professionals to develop projects encouraging cycling, walking and public transport use.
School Projects
Initiatives include a new cycle loan scheme at Haughton Academy, public transport confidence building at Hurworth School, and a bike equipment loan project at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form. The projects have the potential to benefit thousands of pupils by influencing sustainable travel choices while developing leadership and communication skills among participating students.
Council Support
The council and delivery partner Modeshift are keen for more secondary schools and sixth form providers to join the free programme. Nick Wallis, cabinet member for children and young people, said the programme reflects council ambitions to help residents live well and stay healthy while ensuring Darlington is a thriving place with well-connected communities.
"It is great to see the young people identifying transport challenges, developing practical solutions and becoming advocates for sustainable travel within their schools and communities," Wallis said.
Lou Millington, Active Travel ambassador coordinator (Northeast) from Modeshift, said the free programme teaches students valuable skills in budget management and organisation alongside tackling transport issues.
