Darlington Borough Council is hosting free community bulb planting events during the October half-term. Residents of all ages, Friends groups, volunteers and ward councillors are invited to plant approximately 8,500 spring-flowering bulbs around more than 100 trees across three local parks.

The planting will take place at Stanhope Park, North Lodge Park and North Park. The council aims to enhance local parks, support biodiversity and pollinators, and encourage residents to connect with their local green spaces.

What the Council Hopes to Achieve

The council hopes residents will informally adopt the tree they plant bulbs around and return to it throughout the year. The bulbs will flower from late winter to early summer, allowing people to watch their trees change through the seasons.

Libby McCollom, cabinet member for local services, said the project supports the Council Plan priority to create a well-connected, clean and sustainable borough. "This project is about much more than planting bulbs," she said. "It's an opportunity for people to get involved in their parks, support wildlife and create something they can come back and enjoy throughout the year."

McCollom thanked council staff and Friends Groups for their volunteering efforts in creating a community atmosphere in the parks.
