A long-running shopfront improvement scheme in Darlington town centre has concluded, with the final three businesses completing their upgrades. The Quakerhouse pub in Mechanic's Yard, Crafty's in Buckton's Yard and BJ Upholstery in Clark's Yard are the last to benefit from the coordinated regeneration initiative.
Since the scheme launched in 2021, more than 70 town centre businesses have had their shopfronts transformed. Work included new signage, windows, rendering and painting, primarily focusing on the Yards and Skinnergate area.
Part of Wider £23m Regeneration Programme
The scheme formed part of a government-funded £23m regeneration programme led by Darlington Borough Council. It aimed to improve the appearance of the town centre while supporting business growth and creating a more vibrant, accessible and sustainable environment.
Project Darling Recognition
Artist Nicky Peacock's vision for the area, titled Project Darling, reimagined the town's yards and helped establish them as a destination for shopping, eating and socialising. The project won the best in region award at the RTPI North East Awards for Planning Excellence in 2024.
Cabinet member for economy Cllr Chris McEwan said: "This long running improvement project has brought so much vibrancy and improvement to our town centre, in particular the yards area which now looks much more attractive and inviting."
The fund for the scheme closed in March 2026 with no further applications being accepted.
