Nearly 47% of mothers in Darlington are breastfeeding their babies at 6-8 weeks after birth, according to 2024/25 data released by Darlington Borough Council. This marks a significant increase compared to the last decade and outpaces the Northeast average of 41%, though it remains below the national average.

The council is marking National Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August 2025) by encouraging local mothers to continue breastfeeding. While any amount of breastfeeding is beneficial, exclusively breastfeeding for six months offers greater protection for babies, reducing the risk of infection, diarrhoea, vomiting, childhood diabetes and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

Health Benefits for Mothers and Children

Breastfeeding also protects mothers against diabetes, cardiovascular disease, some types of cancer and other long-term health conditions. Evidence shows that adults who were breastfed as babies have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and are less likely to be obese.

Lorraine Hughes, director of public health in Darlington, said: "Breastfeeding your baby is a great way to make sure you're setting them up with a solid foundation for their future health. With the right support and guidance, it can be a fulfilling, connecting and positive experience. It's also cheaper, more convenient and more environmentally friendly."

Local Support Available

A weekly support group operates at the Dolphin Centre and an infant feeding clinic is available at Darlington Library. A number of venues across the town offer welcoming environments for breastfeeding mothers and their families. The 0-19 Growing Healthy app provides information on starting breastfeeding, sustaining it and responsive feeding.

Councillor Matthew Roche, cabinet member for health and housing, said the rising breastfeeding rates will positively impact the health and wellbeing of local children and families. He noted that healthy life expectancy in Darlington is currently 60 years old.
