Work on the second phase of improvements to Woodland Road will begin during the week of 3 August. The scheme will extend the cycle route from the Hollyhurst Road junction along Woodland Road to Deneside Road, also known as the Tennis Dene.
The project is part of a wider plan to create safer, more attractive and accessible facilities for people walking, wheeling and cycling. It aims to connect West Park and Faverdale to the town centre via an enhanced route.
What the work includes
Phase one of the scheme made improvements to Duke Street and created a cycle route along part of Woodland Road. The second phase will extend that cycle route and introduce new priority crossings on side streets to give greater visibility to people walking along Woodland Road.
Feedback from a 2022 consultation has been incorporated into the design where possible.
Traffic and access during construction
Work will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption and maintain two-way traffic on Woodland Road. However, temporary traffic lights and junction and pavement closures will be needed at times to allow work to be carried out safely. Signed diversions will direct pedestrians to temporary crossing locations when necessary.
Residents, businesses and road users are advised to take extra care when travelling through the area.
Timeline and updates
The work is anticipated to be completed by November 2027. Darlington Borough Council will provide updates throughout the construction programme, including information on key milestones and traffic management arrangements.
