Hopetown Darlington has been awarded the Sandford Award for heritage learning, in recognition of its education programme and commitment to inspiring young people through railway heritage.
The award is presented by the Heritage Education Trust in partnership with Lincoln Bishop University and is a nationally respected benchmark for quality in heritage education.
What the assessors said
Assessors praised Hopetown's ability to bring Darlington's internationally significant railway story to life through engaging learning programmes, interactive museum experiences, access to collections and the innovative time-travel simulator ride, Experiment.
In their official citation, assessors described the redeveloped site and schools offer as "a triumph" and "a huge asset to the celebration of railway heritage in Darlington". They noted that schools are "treated with care and consideration" and that learners' individual needs are "identified and catered for by an excellent learning and access officer".
The assessors' report highlighted the quality of Hopetown's schools programme, describing it as offering "brilliant differentiation for all learners". Teachers involved in the assessment praised the level of communication and care shown towards their pupils.
Opening and visitor numbers
Hopetown opened in July 2024 following a major redevelopment of the historic railway site. Since opening, it has welcomed 375 school visits and 14,520 pupils, making it one of the region's leading destinations for heritage learning.
The attraction also offers a comprehensive programme for home educators, creating additional opportunities for young people to engage with Darlington's railway heritage.
Council response
Libby McCollom, cabinet member for local services, said the achievement "reflects the dedication of our team in creating inspiring learning experiences that bring Darlington's remarkable railway story to life for young people".
