Darlington Borough Council has launched a new WhatsApp channel to deliver council news, service updates and alerts directly to residents' phones.
The channel operates as a one-way broadcasting service, meaning residents can follow or unfollow at any time. Users can choose to receive notifications when updates are posted, ensuring they see important information as soon as it is shared rather than relying on social media algorithms.
How to sign up
Signing up is free and takes minutes. Residents should visit www.darlington.gov.uk/whatsapp and scan the QR code on the page. Channels appear in WhatsApp's separate 'Updates' tab.
Privacy and engagement
Unlike WhatsApp chats, followers cannot see who else follows the channel or view other users' phone numbers. While the channel does not allow comments, users can react to content using emojis and can easily share content with other WhatsApp users, including those who do not follow the channel.
Update schedule
Content will normally be shared on the platform during working hours, Monday to Friday. Updates may be posted outside these times in emergency situations or exceptional circumstances.
Cllr Mandy Porter, cabinet member for resources, said the channel reflects how people prefer to receive information. "According to Ofcom WhatsApp is the smartphone app most used by UK adults. Expanding our communications channels will make it easier for residents to stay informed about local issues and decisions impacting them and their communities, as well as strengthening our existing emergency communications approach."
