Firefighters in County Durham are urging parents to speak to their children about the dangers of fire-setting after a sharp rise in deliberate fires in Chester-le-Street this summer.
County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) has attended 20 deliberate fires in the South Pelaw area of Chester-le-Street since June. Most incidents occur between 4pm and 7pm, with bins being the primary target.
Safety Advice for Residents
CDDFRS is asking residents and businesses to reduce the risk by bringing in their bins immediately after collection. Bins should be kept secure and positioned away from buildings.
Station Manager Gary Tough said: "Deliberate fires can put lives at risk and divert emergency services from genuine emergencies. Such incidents can also damage the environment and impact the wider community."
He added: "We want to encourage parents to speak to children and young people about the dangers of fire-setting."
Community Response
Firefighters are working with police, wardens, and local councillors to tackle the issue. Plans include walkabouts of affected areas and advice sessions for residents on fire safety.
