Darlington Borough Council is warning residents to be vigilant following a spate of vandalism at bus shelters in Red Hall. A number of shelters have been targeted in recent weeks, with some incidents involving electrical wiring boxes. The damage has meant there is now no lighting in these shelters.

Lighting columns in the area have also been vandalised. The council has had to disconnect the shelters from the mains to make them safe, leaving commuters without lighting just as the dark nights are drawing in.

Police and council investigation

Darlington Borough Council's community safety team and police are investigating the incidents.

Jim Garner, cabinet member for stronger communities, said the vandalism poses a particular danger. "This is a particularly dangerous type of vandalism, not only for the vandals themselves but also the public," he said. "This kind of mindless behaviour often impacts the most vulnerable in our community and it will not be tolerated."

How to report vandalism

Anyone who witnesses vandalism should call 999. To report vandalism after it has taken place, residents can call 111 or visit www.durham.police.uk.
