Darlington has won three gold awards at the Northumbria In Bloom competition following an award presentation today.
The town received gold in the categories of best city centre, best park (South Park), and best tourist and visitor attraction (Hopetown Darlington station garden). Darlington was also recognised as the most improved overall entry.
What the judges said
The judges highlighted Darlington's green spaces and floral displays. "Darlington is a remarkably green town with the parks and the area in the centre by the river," they said. "The planters and hanging baskets are colourful and healthy and the gardens are developing each year. Businesses, council and residents obviously take a pride in their town."
Council leader's response
Steve Harker, leader of Darlington Borough Council, said: "I am absolutely delighted that we have won three golds at this year's Northumbria In Bloom. These awards are testament to the hard work of all the volunteers, staff and Friends groups who make our public spaces look so fantastic throughout the year. I'd like to give a huge thanks to everyone who helped make this happen."
Harker added that protecting and promoting the local environment is one of the priorities in the Council Plan, and that the awards demonstrate how working together can ensure Darlington remains a great place to live, work and visit.
