Learning & Skills Darlington has partnered with Darlington Primary Care Network to offer free digital skills courses that include training on using the NHS App. The partnership aims to tackle healthcare inequalities linked to digital exclusion by embedding NHS App training into existing adult learning programmes.
All 11 GP practices across Darlington will promote the courses to patients who face barriers to digital access. The courses are free to most local adults and take place in a friendly, low-pressure environment.
What the courses cover
Current modules cover the basics of using a computer, managing files, word-processing, accessing and browsing the internet, and staying safe online. From September, the courses will also include information on setting up and using the NHS App, including how to manage prescriptions, book appointments, and view health records.
Why the partnership matters
Dr Alison McNaughton-Jones, Clinical Director of Darlington Primary Care Network, said improving digital skills makes it easier for people to use the NHS App and increases access to health information and support services. She added that better digital capability helps reduce unnecessary administrative enquiries to GP practices, freeing up staff time for more urgent patient care.
Cllr Chris McEwan, Deputy Leader of Darlington Borough Council, said the partnership addresses a real need in local communities and will equip residents with skills to manage their health while supporting wider opportunities in employment, education, and community connections.
