A Darlington taekwondo academy is celebrating an 11-medal return from the WUMF World Championships after taking a team of seven competitors to the event.
East Meets West Taekwondo Academy says its athletes won six gold medals, one silver and four bronze medals across the two-day competition on 10 and 11 October.
The academy finished ninth in the taekwondo team standings, according to chief instructor Master Jason Park. The championship's official event listing places the competition at K2 in Crawley, with both sparring and poomsae disciplines.
Success across both competition days
On the first day, five academy competitors entered poomsae, the discipline based on set patterns of movements. They returned with two gold medals, one silver and two bronzes.
Six competitors took part in sparring on the second day, adding four gold medals and two bronze medals to the team's total.
“To take just seven competitors to a World Championships and return with 11 medals is an incredible achievement,” Master Park said.
He praised the competitors' determination and the support from their families throughout the championship.
Darlington academy
East Meets West Taekwondo Academy was established in 2012 and now has a dedicated training centre at 176 Victoria Road in Darlington.
The academy has offered to provide a team photograph and further results from the weekend. The official WUMF event listing has further information about the competition.
